Florida Income Tax Overview
Florida is one of a handful of states with no personal income tax, and that policy is locked into the state constitution rather than left to the legislature's mood each session. No wages, salary, freelance income, retirement distribution, or capital gain is taxed at the state level. There is no Florida 1040, no state withholding schedule, and no state Department of Revenue form for individuals to file on their earnings.
What this does not erase is the federal layer. Every Florida resident still owes federal income tax to the IRS on a progressive bracket schedule, plus payroll taxes on wages. The absence of a state tax simply means your total income-tax bill ends where the federal figure ends, instead of having a second percentage stacked on top. Retirees feel this sharply, since Social Security, pensions, and IRA withdrawals all escape state taxation in Florida even when the federal government taxes part of them.
