New York Tax Overview
A New York paycheck passes through more hands than most. The federal layer is universal: income tax withheld per your W-4, Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to the $184,500 base, and Medicare at 1.45% on every dollar. New York then adds a progressive state income tax that climbs through nine brackets to a top rate of 10.9%, plus a State Disability Insurance deduction of 0.5% of wages and a separate Paid Family Leave premium. Live or work in New York City and a municipal income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% stacks on as well.
Those extra lines are what make a New York stub look busy. SDI is capped at roughly sixty cents a week under the state's Disability Benefits Law, so it's a small fixed bite, while the PFL premium is a percentage of wages set each year by the state. A Yonkers resident carries a 16.75% surcharge on their state tax on top of everything. Pre-tax 401(k) money, up to the $24,500 deferral limit, trims the federal and state income tax pieces but not Social Security or Medicare.
